Reduce risk of man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks and facilitates secure interconnection
Long-range, permanently emitting radio technologies present security risks. They invite the attention of unwanted, potentially malicious observers. Those observers may be able to capture signals and, for example, run a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack to crack security measures and capture transmitted data.
The Tap's NFC tag implementation eliminates the need for permanently emitted radio signals. Communication can be initiated when a user is present. Their mobile device is paired directly with the target system's Bluetooth or Wi-Fi when the mobile is within 3 cm of the NFC tag. No manual entry of codes or keys is required to establish the encrypted connection. The Tap and the user's mobile directly exchange single-session keys to encrypt the data channel. The transmission range is limited to 3 cm making it extremely difficult to capture any of the transmissions without cumbersome, easily observable equipment.
